Things that make me happy

The weather is beautiful today. The snow on the deck has melted and I stepped out into a warm breeze for the first time this year. Therefore it was time to try out my new, blue knee socks from WeLoveColors! (w/ a black tee, gray snakeskin jean skirt from Tripp NYC and black patent pumps from Payless)

This week has been a little exhausting so far. I’ve been coming in early for training, which caused me to wake up without an alarm at 8:30 this morning. I hate to admit it, but I kind of enjoyed being up an hour early…not that I got out of bed or anything. I’ve always been adamant that I am not a morning person, but as long as it’s voluntary and I’m not up before 8am it’s pretty OK. I even had time to make an omelet. Is this a sign of growing up?

Also making my mornings wonderful and a sign of growing up….

That would be my shiny, clean, brand new Scion XD. Love love love!

Aerial Yoga: Week 8

Our final aerial class was full of accomplishments and I’m truly proud of what I’ve achieved. I’ve struggled with the cross, half-cross and the mid-air foot lock the past two weeks and this time I had the strength and energy to do do them all. We all were pretty bad ass today – Ria flipped herself into the locust and I saw Mandy slide into dirty dreadlock splits. It’s pretty impressive since just 8 weeks ago we could barely climb the fabric or or clamor onto the trapeze.

I can’t remember that this trick is called, but look at that foot lock on the bottom – perfect!

Half-cross = totally terrifying! This trick takes balls more that anything. I know my grip and arm strength will hold me up, but it’s so scary to take my feet off the bar. I couldn’t do it last week, but this week I was determined.

And the full iron cross – even more terrifying because you’re not hanging from anything. I just started yelling once my feet were off the bar and Ria made me do it again so she could take a picture.

I never expect to enjoy this class as must as I did. I’ve never been athletic or one to practice a lot. But this has been such a fantastic challenge that I work every week, stretching and building arm strength, so when I get to class on Sunday I can climb a little higher and stretch a little further. It’s been thrilling and surprising the crazy things my mind and body are doing because it takes as much balls and it does strength.

My pull up bar is going to a lot of use for the next two weeks and then it’s back to the Fly House for another eight sessions!

Review: Half Broke Horses

When Half Broke Horses arrived at my house I was a little skeptical. It wasn’t something I would have picked out for myself – early 20th century, cowboys and ranch-living – but I trust those who chose it as The Slow Readers first book, so I got to reading.

What a pleasant surprise! I expected the book to be more along the lines of We Were the Mulvaneys or The Heart is a Lonely Hunter – solemn, detailed and deep. But Half Broke Horses is beautiful and charming. Written in first person, Jeannette Walls, gives voice to her grandmother’s wild life.

It details the life of Lily Casey Smith, from her days growing up on a ranch in Texas, to her stint in big city Chicago and back to a ranch with her husband and two children. While most people would have trembled at the thought of leaving home alone at 15, trekking across the country on horseback for weeks and starting life in a new town, Lily jumped at the chance. After enduring flash floods, losing multiple jobs, and sorry excuse for a husband, strong willed doesn’t even cover it. She tells even the darkest parts of her life with humor and spunk.

This book has definitely been added to my life of favorites. I was excited to get home from work every day, hop in bed with Slayer and see what trouble Lily Casey Smith was getting into. Lily’s determination to keep herself and her family afloat is so inspiring and makes me want to get off my butt do something adventurous.

Happiness Loves Company

I’m a little explosion of happiness today. I did 5 pull-ups this morning…FIVE!! I’ve never been able to do a pull-up in my life and then this morning I woke up with super strength and did five. I immediately texted my brother, who we call Popeye on account of his muscles, and bragged. To which he responded “time for a new goal http://www.beastskills.com/MuscleUp.htm” Uh Oh!

Other things lighting up my life…

Also, the first half of my tax return showed up in my bank account this morning and I hope the second half isn’t far behind because then I’ll be able to buy my car! Annnd I have a date tonight with 1/3 of Triple Threat!

Last night…where do I even start? I don’t think Triple Threat has ever been this epic. We sure set the bar high this time.

I picked up Jessica and we headed to Royal Oak for the Alkaline Trio show. I love shows like this because everyone comes out of the woodwork and I got to see faces that haven’t been hanging around lately. I saw Cursive live for the first time ever and hung out with my friend Jeremy who introduced me to their music in college.

AK3 played lots of old stuff (Crawl, My Friend Peter, Radio) and I had a great view from behind the sound booth. Jessica’s friend Jason managed to scramble into the audience and grab the set list after the sound guy turned it into a paper plane and sent it soaring over the crowd.

After the show we walked a couple blocks to the bar with hopes that AK3 would show up. Angie had run into Matt earlier in the day and told him he should come hang with us after the show. We loaded the jukebox, played pinball, ate 4 bags of popcorn (best popcorn EVER) and I had a super awkward conversation with some random dude. It goes in the same category of FAIL as my lovely kiss from last weekend. Can I please just have some normal interaction with dudes?

The band finally showed up and I used it as an excuse to get away from Mr. Awkward Pauses. We hung out and chatted, did our best to flirt, and at 2am as we headed out of the bar, Matt invited us back to the bus. Now, not to sound like some skanky groupie, but when the singer of one of your favorite bands invites you back to the bus, YOU JUST GO.

It was a little weird because everyone was chilling out watching “Purple Rain.” Matt made Jessica and Angie drinks and for me, the sober driver, he decided to make a kiddie cocktail. Though what I ended up with was San Pellegrino and pink Gatorade – not so good.

We hung out until about 4am, Matt having a tourettes like urge to tell me I looked hot, gorgeous, foxy, etc. He questioned why Angie and I were single, repeatedly told us to never date a guy who doesn’t open doors, showed us pictures of his adorable girlfriend, and said we need to find guys that will take us for a picnic on a grassy knoll. And we were all “Those dudes don’t exist!! Send us some!”

I think I did a pretty good job of keeping my shit together and not spazzing because I was having a conversation with a dude from one of my favorite bands. I cannot really put the amazingness into words, but I pretty much died. And the universe totally made up for creepy-guy-palooza I’ve been dealing with for the past couple weeks. Two thumbs up, Universe, you rock!

Aerial Yoga Week 7

This week I amazed myself by swinging up onto the high trapeze without a boost. I then did 30-something crunches hanging by my knees from the trapeze, which left me with fist-size bruises behind my knees.

It was another review session so we did lots and lots of tricks. I was able to get the foot lock in the air, which means I can do tricks higher off the ground. I’m finding that working on my pull-up bar and doing crunches helps a lot. I can hold myself up a little longer and do tricks with more ease each week.

One more class in this session and then two weeks of before the second session starts! My goal for next session is to perfect my mid-air foot lock, be able to get on the trapeze every time, and do the dreaded half cross on the high trapeze without wanting to pee my pants.

I spent Saturday at my parents house celebrating my dad’s birthday. My mom bought Just Dance for Wii and made everyone take a turn. It was so much fun – I really worked up a sweat and my arms were sore the next day. I also went car shopping with my dad. I drove a Scion XD and looooved it! No competition with the Fit or Versa. As soon as I pulled onto the road I knew it was the one. I made a down payment today and as soon as I get my tax refund it’s alllll mine!

Ode to my favorite jeans

Last Friday while cleaning the bath tub, the knee of my favorite, favorite, favorite, pair of jeans split. I’m not terribly surprised as I’ve been wearing them non-stop for probably four years. I bought them at Delias and though I’ve tried on multiple sizes and pairs in the exact same jean, I cannot manage to find one that fits as well. So I did the only thing possible to salvage them…attacked them with scissors.

This is one of my favorite outfits. The tee from Lira is just the right length and is so soft. And the hoodie, though I managed to throw it in the dryer and fry the fur that lined the hood, is super comfy. (The fried fur has since been removed)

I’m also rocking purple eye shadow to match my purple nails.

This week has been really relaxing. I’ve only gone out once and spent the rest of my nights in bed with the above cuteface, reading Half Broke Horses (almost done!), watching bad TV (looove Real Housewives of Orange County), and stretching so I can do more circus tricks!

Other things making me very happy… DT dance party + being one of two people on the dance floor and sweating it out through a 10 min version of “Imma Be” + hanging out with Dunner who I haven’t seen in a loooong time + finding really good peanut butter that’s a tiny bit crunchy and organic and delicious + phone calls from Australia & pretending B is in the future + circus class war wounds – I’ve got some heinous bruises on the backs of my knees + being all adult and shoveling my sidewalk right after it snowed instead of waiting a week and hoping it just melts + peanut butter pancakes for dinner + talking to my mom on the phone + calling dad to wish him a happy bday + making a plan to not have plans + leg warmers + purple nails + waking up to the descendents + Slayer jumping in my bed every morning at 8am and putting his little head next to mine on the pillow + cable knit thigh high socks + cheesy tv that makes me cry + ordering lots of used books + light bulb moments + budgeting (yep, really) + cutting my internet cable bill in half +

How does he twist the dance?

Last night was our semi-weekly DT dance party. We get there at 9:55 because cover starts at 10 and drinks are a buck. They play bad pop music (like actually bad, not just bad but you secretly love the song anyway) and everyone stands outside the dance floor, which is surrounded by a fence/bar type dealy, throwing back drinks until they’re buzzed enough to dance. Around 11 the DJ starts playing Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, LMFAO and the dance floor fills up.

Generally scattered throughout the couples grinding and the groups of drunk girls there are a handful of single dudes, awkwardly getting down all by themselves. They don’t try to interact or dance with anyone else. They just rock out in their little bubble of weirdness.

Last night hit a whole new level of strange which made me wonder if I had missed when they handed out complimentary hits of acid. The single, awkward dudes headed to the dance floor way before everyone else had enough to drink and it turned into the Olympics of uncoordinated weirdos.

It started with a tall lanky guy, dressed in black with chin-length, blond ringlets who looked like a toy solider inside a Trouble Pop-O-Matic Bubble. Then there was a bald white guy swiveling his hips around like a marionette trying to back that ass up. On the stage was a little nerdy guy, dressed business casual bopping around in circles and another dude who kept ending up on the floor and then popping up with some sort of head/hand movement.

Keep in mind, theses were the ONLY people on the dance floor. Everyone else was sitting, transfixed, drinks in hand, jaws on the floor. I tried to take a video with my BBerry, but it was just too dark. I want to turn them into a dance troupe -it would be a YouTube hit.

About 30 minutes later, once we were sufficiently buzzed and the music got better, we joined the weirdo party on the dance floor and I got a seriously good workout. By the end of the night I was sweaty, my thighs were burning and my bangs were a complete mess. I tried to fix them, to have pretty side bangs instead of sweaty piecey straight bangs, but it was no use. And therefore you get no pictures!
