Sunday Blog Love

This week was for…extra long Piglet walks + raw vegan magic bars delivered to my door + striped tights + red wine + Saves The Day at a park downtown + running every other day + launching designs + building templates + pizza delivery + nifty nines + bike rides
I spent today thinking about moving away from Michigan. Renting my little house, packing up whatever would fit in my car, and high-tailing it out of this state. There seems to be an epidemic of 20/30-somethings who are all too satisfied with working a crappy bar/restaurant job and partying on their days off. It’s rare that I meet people with any real ambition or goals, which means the dating pool is shallow and immature. I could move an hour north and plug myself in with the middle-class norms, their business casual work week and family values, but I would fit in even less there. So where do I go to find creative, vibrant people with interesting job titles and ambitious tendencies, who actually have a plan for where their lives are headed? There really isn’t anything holding me here – as long as there’s internet, I can work from anywhere.
Have any of you just up and moved?

Why not move somewhere new entirely? I moved from the North of England to Edinburgh for four years and now I have somehow ended up in Australia, via Singapore.
Just move. Nothing to stop you. Have a living adventure.

Seattle. Seriously, you would fit right in here.
Thanks for sharing my travel map! I was born and raised in New Orleans and a year and a half ago I up and moved to Boston! It has been a really great experience to explore a new city. I have actually decided to move back home though, it was fun while it lasted!
Hi Sarah! This guy is a bit extreme in his up and moving around (he moves to a different country every 4 months) but it’s really interesting and inspirational to read about his journeys.

You’re business savvy, so I’m sure you’ll think about this, but I tried to rent out my house for a few years and it was less than successful. It was really stressful dealing with renters directly, and when I hired a leasing agent, he turned out to care more about the renters than me and kind of screwed me over in several maintenance issues that I felt should have been the tenant’s responsibility. (like when they left for a week long vacation, left the back porch light on the entire time, and when it overheated and caught fire – thank goodness for a brick house! – I had to pay to replace the boards in my deck and the lighting fixture and labor to do all those.) I’m not at all trying to discourage you, just be sure you have an emergency fund specifically for things like that, and are able to cover a few months if one tenant moves out and you aren’t immediately able to get another one in.
I wish you the best of luck in your move though! I’m dying to get out of St. Louis!
Oh, when I first moved out of the house and into an apartment, I also had my 80 pound lab going from having a yard to a small 2 bedroom, and he handled it no problem. He’s a super easy going dog.
Whoa – that guy is nuts and pretty inspiring! Thanks for the link :)
I definitely wouldn’t be renting to random people. I’d only let friends or friends of friends live in my precious little house haha. And you know I’m all responsible with my emergency fund over here ;)
Last March, I moved from North Carolina to Colorado just so I can be fed more vibrant inspiration than NC could ever possibly give me. It’s a plus to have my fiance & 3 year old son here with me! :]
That’s good to know – it would be nice to connect with more people who are working to grow their businesses instead of just being inspired online.
I can’t tell you what a relief it was to read this! I moved back to Detroit more than a year ago after being out west, and I’ve been really feeling the exact disconnect you are. I’ve been pondering whether to move back west someplace or if I just haven’t given the folks in the city a chance. Thanks for letting me know it not all completely in my head. Also, your blog is lovely (let’s get coffee or something).
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one! There is a lot of good stuff going on here, but it’s a select few busting their butts to make something. Most people are just enjoying their 20s/30s and aren’t headed in any specific direction.
Have you considered San Francisco? I moved here two years ago and I finally felt like I could develop myself into who I really wanted to be. There’s the circus center as well, and the graphic design all over this city is off the hook. And I’ll be your friend! Haha :p
I’ve been looking at SF a bit. My brother is in San Diego, so it would be nice to be close to at least one person I know. The California coast is calling to me :)
I’m in Michigan too and I know how you feel. On the other hand, it seems like everyone I know has been moving out of state lately which doesn’t help matters. You could always just move an hour west to the Ann Arbor area–there’s good people out this way and a lot of ambitious folks at U of M. Still, if I had nothing holding me here I’d probably leave pretty quick too.
I’ve never been a big AA fan. It probably doesn’t help that I get hopelessly lost every time I drive there >_<
Move where your heart desires and don’t think about those things. Just do it and see what happens :)

I think that 20/30-somethings with no goals and ambitions is an epidemic EVERYWHERE lately. *le sigh*
I haven’t moved yet, but I’m planning on it. I know what you mean about the dating pool. I live in a very, very conservative town in the South. There are about two guys who have similar views to mine and they’re icky. I love the people here, I really do, but I have to get away from the suffocation before I go nuts. I’m planning on moving out to Monterey as soon as I get out of grad school.
I think about that all the time, too. Let’s move to Portland… or Boulder… or anywhere on the California coast. If I made a ton of money I’d live in the South Bay area in a heartbeat.
If you find somewhere to move let me know, I’ll go too! haha
There’s actually a pretty decent creative scene in Indianapolis, but it’s a bit too widespread and more crafty than design-y. I’d imagine there’s something similar in Detroit if you look for it. But yeah, it’s hard to find anyone who really has much ambition, most people I know are happy to be servers and then party their money away. That’s fine for them, but not the life for me!
Yep, lots of crafty folk here too, but no one with ambition that matches mine – no dudes at least!
raw magic bars? want!
I’d love to move to another country, but I should finish the college first.
I like checking your links every Monday.
Also – there’s an awesome circus scene out here. ;-)
Yep – That’s how I ended up in Oakland.
It’s a great feeling, to just pick up and start over.
I figure if there’s no circus scene where ever I end up I’ll just bring my silks and start my own :)
Move to San Diego ;)
You’ll be happy to know that’s exactly where I’ve been looking for a place :) I just need to find something that has space outside for Slayer to run around. I’d feel so bad moving him from a house with a yard to a tiny apartment.
