6 Weeks: Connecting With Your Audience

Today Sarah Von from Yes and Yes is here to talk about connecting with your readers. How do you go from being a random person on the other side of the screen to someone they want to hang out and chat with? Here are Sarah’s tips…

Don’t be afraid to write the way you speak.  Of course, you probably don’t want to drop the f-bomb every third word, but people want to feel like they know their favorite bloggers.  We want to feel like you’re our friend and someone we could grab a coffee with. It’s hard to feel that way about someone whose writing is stiff and dry.

Also, let your readers into your life – at least a little.  I’m probably a lot more private than most bloggers; I rarely mention friends by name, I don’t talk about who I’m dating and I don’t post that many photos of myself.  But I talk about the products/music/books I love, weird new things I try and all my travels.  So it’s entirely possible to connect with your readers without baring your soul or including every nitty, gritty detail of your daily life.

Thanks Sarah for sharing your advice! On to today’s challenge…

Hello from London :) What a great post series. It’s great to see so many people committed to helping others improve their blogging. I’ve just started an editorial toolkit on my blog and it’s been tons of fun to do. Keep up the good work x

  3. This is so good to remember. I think I had a harder time with this in the beginning but still working on it.

I love this series, by the way! Always excited to see you have a new post via Twitter.

That’s what I’ve been trying to do with my “new” version of my blog, simply write how I speak rather than think too hard on how to get it all out or create something profound. Once I write it out how I’d say it to you while hanging out and eating dessert, I realize it sounds just fine. :)
