I get lots of quizzical looks and questions when I tell people I only wash my hair once a week. “How do you even do that?” they say, “My hair would get so gross and oily.” Well mine does, but thanks to dry shampoo I can save my color and my money and still look good.

With my bananas schedule I just don’t have time to wash all this hair every day…plus it’s just not good for those follicles. Once a week I take the time to shampoo, dry and straighten my hair.  It lasts for about three days before my bangs start getting a little greasy so I spray dry shampoo just on my part and on the roots right at the front of my hair, hit everything with a flat iron and I’m good to go.

By day five my hair is starting to get gnarly, so I have a couple options…one, spray my roots a lot where they look oily and flat iron everything again, or two, spray less, tease the crap out of my hair and pull it up into an obnoxiously large bun.

I try to keep my fingers out of my hair because not only will it cause it to be more oily, but once I start layering in the dry shampoo it isn’t doesn’t feel very clean.

Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo is my brand of choice and I’ve been using it religiously for years. I’ve tried a bunch of cheaper options, but since my hair gets progressively more gross every day I don’t wash it, I really need that volumizer to keep it from looking limp and icky.

When I do find time to wash my hair, I use Aussie Moist Shampoo & Conditioner.

Are you a dry shampoo user or a wash every day kind of girl?

I have recently discovered dry shampoo, I love it! Let’s just say NZ is a little behind on, well, everything. I have been using the Batiste brand. I always went around 5 days without needing to wash, but by 7 it was what I like to call manky. I have quite curly hair, really has a mind of it’s own. It looks the best on days 2-4, so why would I wash it half way through that. To add to that, it takes FOREVER to wash, and style it from dry. My hair doesn’t play well with a hair dryer, but i currently have a fringe (bangs) so, well, yeah, it needs attention.
Oh, and the more I read your wonderful blog, the more I want to run away and join the circus!

I think this is an amazing ideaaaaa, but, for me, it could never be reality. I can avoid washing my hair for about a day and a half. I have naturally thin blonde hair, so I feel like the greasiness shows waay too much. Esspecially when I add product, or try to pull it up. ): I’m destined for unhealthy tresses.

  3. I’ve been trying to get down to once a week ever since I started dying my hair red. It’s my favorite hair color out all the ones I’ve tried but it fades soooo fast! I’ve actually been looking for this brand of dry shampoo because I’ve heard good things about it but I can never find it! Now I’m even more determined!

I usually get mine at Ulta, if that have that near you

I’m so happy when people come out and say they don’t wash their hair every day! I feel like these days a lot of people automatically put it in ‘ew gross’ category, while it really shouldn’t be. Even with very oily hair, most trichologists recommend washing hair every other day.

I use generic baby powder. I recently dyed my hair blonde, so it doesn’t really give me a bit of that greyish mist anymore, like it used to with my natural dark brown. But five days is pushing it for me.

I know – hair gets so much healthier when you don’t wash it. And yeah, after five days my hair is gnarly, but I just put it up and keep my hands out of it. Today I’m on day five and I just braided it back.

Dry shampoo irritates my already dry eczema-riddled scalp so I wash every other day and use a deep conditioner and leave that on for a while to help the scalp.

Thank you for posting this! I’ve been looking for dry shampoo recommendations! I also don’t like to wash my hair more than once a week. I straighten with a flat iron too and totally hate spending the time to do it very often since it takes me like an hour to go from curly to straight! I hate how oily it gets though and find myself wanting to wear hats to hide it sometimes. I feel so gross doing that though! Totally gonna try dry shampoo soon! Oh and Aussie moist shampoo & conditioners are my faves!

I HATE washing my hair, so this post must be directed at me :) I’ve used a cheaper dry shampoo and it was just okay… I need to try a nicer brand like the one you mentioned! Even if I could get away with once every three or four days I’d be happy!

I just recently started using dry shampoo and so far so good. I’ll go about 2 or 3 days before washing it again. Your tips to make it last a week are good – definitely going to try them out!

I only wash every two to three days. I use a dry shampoo but need to try a new one. I’m over the funky fruity smells a lot of them seem to have. Ojun smells like old lady baby powder. :p

what about working out? i have a TON of hair that is dry so i try to only wash my hair every three days or so. but if i workout, i get way too sweaty and have to wash it early. it’s actually one of my main excuses for not working out. :(

    sillygrrl Reply:

Yeah working out is a killer. I only wash my hair after working out if I’m really sweaty haha

Honestly, I am a shampooer for every three or so days until I feel gross. I have a busy schedule as well and I have to literally squeeze in time to take a shower with my fiance to do two things: hang with him around his busy schedule and to wash at the same time. I really do need to take better care of my hair and I feel that Dry Shampoo might help. Thanks for the post!

    sillygrrl Reply:

It totally makes my hair softer and it doesn’t appreciate shampoo at all now haha

  12. Liz says:

Haha I do the same thing! Except I recently misplaced my dry shampoo & am on the hunt for the new one. I use Big Sexy Hair shampoo/conditioner and didn’t even think to check if they make a dry shampoo. Duh! Going to pick that up tonight now, thanks ;)

I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. I can’t wash it less than that since it’s short, there’s no pulling-up option to really keep it out of my face if it’s dirty. I recently made my own “dry” shampoo which is tea tree oil, some alcohol, and a little baking soda. It helps, but I’m not in love with it. Might have to buy something eventually.

I’ve been thinking about trying to make my own sometime, but I’m hooked on Big Sexy Hair for now :)

  14. Jen says:

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been looking at the dry shampoo route for awhile, but haven’t gone there yet. Having thick curly hair, I can’t wash everyday or it strips it, but I have to wash my bangs almost everyday since they are short and get gross quickly. Baby powder has been a nice helper at times.

    sillygrrl Reply:

When I had bangs I totally washed them every couple days – those are a little more difficult to keep looking pretty :)

  15. Jennie says:

I actually know a lot of people who only wash there hair 1-2 times a week, Do you have thicker hair? or curlier/wavy? I’ve tried it, but find, it just flattens out, however it is great to work with to do braids and up dos.

    sillygrrl Reply:

I don’t have thick hair, I just have a lot of hair haha. Definitely need a volumizing dry shampoo. I don’t know how well it will work for wavy hair because you have to brush it through, but like Sarah Rooftops said earlier, some company makes a dry mousse for curly hair.

  16. Courtney says:

I wish I could do that! I do use dry shampoo periodically, but I still end up needing to wash my hair every other day or so (it’s rare that I can go longer than that). My hair’s naturally pretty greasy and it’s also thin. After more than a day or so it starts getting gross fast.

  17. Dry shampoo is no use on curly hair, but I do have a “dry” mousse I sometimes use; it cleans my hair but leaves it very fluffy.

I wet and condition my hair every day, but I don’t shampoo very often – it looks clean and feels much nicer this way. I’m also looking into switching to homemade, natural shampoos as I don’t like that list of chemicals on the back of my shop bought stuff…

  18. Sarah says:

I tried the dry shampoo thing because it seemed like a nice option for those days when I didn’t have time or just didn’t feel like showering, but I wasn’t particularly pleased with the results. I still do it if I literally have no time to shower, but I feel like my hair looks 100x better when it’s freshly washed.
