Touring Detroit

On Monday I fell in love with Detroit all over again. As part of a project for work, I went on a bus tour run by Inside Detroit. I actually thought it would be kind of lame and agreed to go purely for a day away from my desk, but I ended up having a great time. It was eye-opening to see all the things I miss when I’m running to one place or another, eyes on the road, attention focused on my destination. The city has such beautiful architecture and our guide, who was visibly thrilled to be showing us her city, gave us a thorough history lesson. On more than one occasion I thought…oh! that’s where that bar/restaurant/building of historical significance is! And now I have a bunch of places I’m going to go back and visit again.

[ The Guardian Building - the ceiling is painted canvas with horse hair underneath to keep the sound from bouncing ]

[ Sea themed carousel on Rivard Plaza ]

[ Wheelhouse Detroit - take a bike tour or have your wheels tuned up ]

[ Lunch at Traffic Jam & Snug - this quiche was insane...I'm convinced they're holding someone's grandmother hostage to bake crust this good. ]

[ And finally a quick stop to shop at City Bird - check out their online store >>> ]

Have you every taken a guided tour of your city?

This is such a great idea! I didn’t even think about going on a hop on, hop off bus tour until I read this post! This would be a perfect one day trip for my bf and I since we just moved to Miami a few weeks ago and havn’t had the chance to get out and go exploring. Sounds like a good, inexpensive way to get to know a new city!

I love how close Canada is to America. My favorite thing to do is get in my car and cross the border. Where I go isn’t quite a drive over a bridge, but even the two hour trip is pretty awesome.

This looks like so much fun! I love hearing all of those random historical facts about Detroit, or any city for that matter. And I love City Bird! Their stuff is so unique.

Yep. My mother in law and I are members of Historic Wayne and we’ve done The Fox, Greenfield Village, The Guardian, Corktown and Edsel Ford mansion.

LOVE taking tours. I want to do a Cathedral tour of Detroit, but the tours usually take place on Mondays and Tuesdays. :(

Ooo I want to tour the Ford mansion, I bet that was impressive! Greenfield Village would be a fun B3 date…maybe when you’re done working and I’ll take a day off.

I finally got around to watching this. Love it and love the concept! Also, your tour guide is a friend and actually introduced manfriend and I. I knew you were using her business, but didn’t know she did the tour! She’s great — and was instrumental in me moving downtown.

that’s awesome – i feel like everyone in detroit has like 3 degrees of separation. she also knows my boss, so don’t mention the blog if you talk to her ;)

What a cool idea! I had never thought of doing that.
I live in Portland Oregon, so I bet there are some tours etc..here. I should check into.

Enjoyed seeing your pictures too! I haven’t been to Michigan in years.

I just moved back to Michigan after living in the Los Angeles area for the past few years. While I was born and raised in Michigan, I never lived in metro Detroit until now. I’d love to go on a tour like this to learn all about my new city!

Inside Detroit was fantastic and I completely recommend their tours. They do walking, bus and SEGWAY (!!) tours every weekend.
