Four: Island in the sun

July 4, 2010

I spent the weekend vacationing at my parent’s house. Their backyard is in the middle of a renovation, but that didn’t stop us from spending three days floating in the pool.

I camped out on a lounge chair, melting in the sun and read the entire time. There was no sound but the chirping of birds and the drip of water into the pool, and nothing to do but spend time with my family. We took my mom out to dinner for her birthday and made her cry by surprising her with the trip to Chicago she’s been hinting at for months.

We ate waffles with strawberries, watermelon, ice cream cones, hot dogs and coleslaw. At night, when the air “cooled” into the 80s we took Slayer for walks, spotting deer and fireflies. Slayer and I slept on the pullout couch – him curled against me and not moving an inch away until morning.

I finished reading Lady Luck’s Map of Vegas, which I recommend if you’re looking for a summer read. It’s about the complicated relationship between a mother and daughter and all the secrets that come out at they road trip to Vegas.

We also watched The Lovely Bones, which I was really disappointed by because I loved the book. It seemed like Peter Jackson took the premise and then rewrote it to make the movie more intense and dream-like. Oh well.

All weekend I kept stopping and thinking how lucky I am. Lucky that I had three days off, lucky that I enjoy spending time with my family, lucky that my parent’s have a pool and have such a serene backyard, and lucky that I had nothing else to do but relax.
