December 3, 2009

December 3 Article. What’s an article that you read that blew you away? That you shared with all your friends. That you Delicious’d and reference throughout the year.

Originally I couldn’t think of any article that had held on to me throughout the year, but then I stumbled upon Fuck Yeah Detroit and Fuck Yeah Michigan, remembered Time Magazine’s The Detroit Blog, and then followed a link to Model D Media.

So it’s not just one article, but a collection of articles that struck me throughout the year. They highlight a city that from the outside looks broken, crumbling, lost, and in a sense it is, but inside there are so many people and organizations working to make the city bright again, to help it function and allow people to thrive. The bloggers write about the bad stuff too, because there is still a lot of it, but I think these blogs help balance the terrible image the city has.

I love spending time downtown and I hope more people will give Detroit a chance and make a visit because you will leave inspired.

Low Barriers to Entry: Karen Dybis write about the many small businesses setting up shop in downtown Detroit.

Model D posts about the Tour de Troit, which sends 2,000 bikers through the streets of Detroit every year. I’ve been stuck in traffic when they ride by, it’s pretty impressive!

Check out http://fuckyeahdetroit.tumblr.com for beautiful pictures of the city.
