I decided to be good and stick with my budget and that means no expensive trips to the salon. I grabbed two boxes of color ( L’oreal Superior Preference, Intense Copper Red RR07) last night and did it myself. It’s much more difficult now that my hair is getting long. Doing my roots went OK, but I was nervous when it came to coating the ends and managed to fling color everywhere in the process. I’m pleased with how it turned out though! I still want to grow my hair another four inches, so I may head back to the salon then.

It was red before as well
Well I did it! It was messy and a lot stinkier than I expected, but I really love the color. Mine turned out a little bit darker red than yours and its so pretty! Coloring it myself was not nearly as scary as I thought it would be! Thanks for your help!!

Yaaay! Yeah I should have mentioned…open a window :) It gets less messy after you have some practice. So glad I could help!
I found your blog by googling that shade of L’Oreal, I was hoping to find pics of someone who tried it and the results! And it looks beautiful on you!! I got my hair dyed red at a salon well over a month ago and its faded and embarrassingly gross now, and I’m too broke to go back to the salon. :( So I think I’m going to try this! Did this color fade much? I’ve never dyed my hair myself, so I’m kinda scared!! Any tips? Is this the best brand you’ve tried? Also, your blog is really cool. :)

I tend to purchase hair color based on price because I haven’t found any one brand that fades less. I just grab whatever is cheap. I buy two boxes of color and usually use it all. If your hair is above your shoulders you can probably get by with just one.
To color my hair, I divide it into 4 sections, so I’m only working on one section at a time. I do my roots on each section, then go back and taking small chunks of hair, add color along the length. Once I have color on every inch of my hair I start the timer for however long it says on the box. Then I go through and comb out my hair section by section to make sure every inch is saturated.
For unkeep, unless my hair is really gross I don’t use shampoo. I use a red conditioner like John Freida or Aveda’s Madder Root and condition it once a week. Big Sexy Hair dry shampoo keeps my hair from looking oily the rest of the time.
All red seems to fade a lot no matter what brand or salon you go to. I find the orangey-reds fade to a nicer color than reds with more purple. Either way, your best bet is to wash your hair as little as possible.
Hope that helps – good luck!
Love the colour :). Just wondering what colour your hair was before dying it this colour? I have bleached hair I have been dying with Special Effects red and orange hair dyes, but want to go for something slightly more subtle. Am worried about how this colour will come out on bleached hair, or if I should dye a base colour before using this. Hope you can help :).

Hey Kristen – This was a while ago, but my hair was probably already some shade of red. Usually on bleached hair you get a very bright color, but probably not as vibrant as Special Effect.
by any change do you know the colour number so if i order it off the internet its easy to find!

Thanks! I used Superior Preference Intense Copper Red – two boxes since my hair is getting long.
Hello, I was just wondering what colors you bought?
And if you mixed them together?
Yet another interesting piece of info, keep em coming!
You did such a great job and I love your hair color. I recently dyed my hair to and it came out good but the red I chose was intense red copper from L’Oreal Preference and it’s to dark for my complexion and I love the color you chose, do you mind sharing what color you used?
you hair looks awesome, good job :)
As someone who doesn’t DO hairdressers (I’ve been about five times in my whole life) and always dyes my hair myself, I applaud you! And it looks GREAT!!!
Wow, your hair looks great like it was professionally done! Kudos to you since I always mess up when I dye my hair myself.
It looks great! I attempted coloring my hair at home one time.. and I failed miserably. I had to go straight to the salon to fix it! So good job, that’s hard to do! :)
