Last night I went to see a play about cheese balls and sweat. Yes. Gross.
The Book of Liz by David Sedaris and Amy Sedaris was playing at The Ringwald Theater, so I hopped on my bike and met up with Jenn and Rachael.
The play is about a cheese ball-making nun who doesn’t feel appreciated, so she runs away to the outside world. Despite some over-acting, it was pretty funny, thought a few people seemed to think it was HILARIOUS.
The main character was supposed to be very sweaty throughout the play, and she was, along with all the other actors. It must have been pretty hot under those stage lights, so about 10 minutes in I was quite grossed out.
For me, the highlight of the whole play came when skirt was pronounced skee-rt, which had both actors trying to not crack up on stage. For those of you who have read or seen the play – the baby hands didn’t even get me.
I’m a fan of both David and Amy Sedaris, but never find their work as funny as reviewers make it out to be. I expect to be falling out of my seat with laughter from the way their books are described. I would said they’re humorous, but probably only laughed out loud once while reading Me Talk Pretty One Day.
This it turning out to be a bit of a dismal review of the play, but I did really enjoy it. I was impressed that four actors played about 12 characters and I’m always happy to support local arts.
If you’re a metro-Detroit it’s still playing for a couple weeks and they have a double feature with Anne Frankenstein: The Musical on Friday nights.

I looooooove Amy and David Sedaris but this sounds not that intriguing. Have you ever read her book, “I Like You”? It’s incredible.
