So, last week AllTheWine posted an interview meme. I decided to play along and she sent me these questions.
1. You’ve just bought a house. Has that always been a goal of yours, and how did you achieve your goal so quickly?
I rented a house with a friend just before I turned 22 and quickly decided renting was a giant waste of money. Why pay every month and get nothing in return when I could pay into a mortgage and build equity. I moved home and started saving. I decided I wanted to purchase a house by the time I was 25. Two years and a giant raise later I was able to come up with a decent down payment. I saved over half of every pay check and any extra money I found myself with went into my savings account. The market took a nose dive and I got an amazing deal on a beautiful house!
2. How would you describe your decorating style, and what stores do you plan to use to furnish your home?
I’ve been looking a lot at West Elm and CB2, but I really want to do some antique shopping. I’m looking for pieces with clean lines that I will paint bold colors. I also have an affinity for animal prints.
3. If you could only eat three things for the rest of your life, what would they be?
cake, tacos, and potato truffle ravoli from Bastone (which is no longer on their menu! GRRR)
4. There are so many meanings today.. what does being a feminist mean to you?
I always liked bell hook’s definition “feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression” It’s not about man-hating and not shaving, it’s about working together to end things like domestic abuse and human trafficking.
5. What are your favorite and least favorite things about Detroit?
My favorite things are the food (Greektown and Mexican Town), the music scene (any night of the week you can find amazing local music), and the events that bring lots of people downtown – like Dally in the Alley. Also there is a huge amount of activism – Alternatives for Girls, Detroit Summer – people are really working hard to get the D back on track.
My least favorite thing is the lack of public transportation. Also I dislike the bad rap it gets. People need to come here and see that there’s more to the city than the auto industy crisis and shootings.
