Sundays in the D: Getting my ass in gear

Watching CNN Heroes – it always makes me cry and gets my mind back on track. I’ve been a very lazy activist lately, not feeling the motivation to do much. My horoscope said it would come back mid-month. This may just be the kick in the ass I’ve been waiting for.

Many people leave the city they grew up in for something bigger and better. When the buildings are crumbling, more and more people are losing their homes, and violent, senseless crimes riddle the evening news it’s easy to walk away. I refuse to do that.

Like a lot of people in Michigan, I have a stubborn pride. I’ve heard people say Detroit is their least favorite city to visit, but they don’t see what is bubbling beneath its gritty exterior. They don’t see Greening of Detroit planting trees throughout the city, they don’t see Detroit Summer helping youth create media projects to confront the problems they face, the don’t see Alternatives for Girls taking girls off the street and helping to turn their lives around.

I see it and I want to stay and be part of it. So I’m making more plans because that’s what I do best.

I couldn’t agree more. I love Detroit. I think in a couple years it’s going to be something amazing, something more people would be proud of.

  2. Yeah, sometimes I feel lame for staying in my hometown of Fresno, Calif. but I like the way you think – instead of leaving for a better place, why not make the place you’re at better? Now I just have to get involved and help out. Thanks for this post reminded me to DO SOMETHING! I really need to. For my own sanity too.

My hometown is one square mile big. So, yeah, I kind of had to leave it. Kudos for you trying to make your city better.
